Renting a car for the SAAQ road test: the full checklist
Showing up to the road test without an eligible vehicle means losing your appointment. Here is what to confirm before test day, whether you borrow a car or rent one.

Check before test day
- All lights and signals working.
- Registration and proof of insurance in the vehicle.
- Season-appropriate tires.
- Learner's licence and appointment confirmation in hand.
- At least one hour of driving in that specific vehicle.
- 20 to 30 minutes of margin for travel and parking.
The vehicle must be in good working order
Brakes, headlights, turn signals, reverse lights, horn, wipers, seatbelts and mirrors all have to work. A single faulty light can cancel the test before it starts.
Valid registration and insurance
Documents must be current and inside the vehicle. If the car belongs to someone else, make sure you are covered to drive it.
Seasonal tires
In Quebec, winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15. A non-compliant vehicle cannot be used for the test during that period.

Your personal documents
Bring your learner's licence and your appointment confirmation. Double-check the time and exact address of the test centre the day before.
Know the car before the test
This is the most overlooked point. Driving an unfamiliar vehicle during the exam adds real mental load: sharper brakes, a different blind spot, an unusual shifter or camera.
Plan at least one hour of driving in the exact vehicle you will use, ideally right before the appointment.
Arrive early
Allow 20 to 30 minutes of margin for traffic and parking around the test centre, especially in Montreal and Longueuil at peak hours.
